HBL (House Bill of Lading)
House B/L · HBL number
A bill of lading issued by a forwarder to an individual shipper. Express and sea freight arriving from abroad is normally tracked by this number, which usually begins with H.
Carriers do not accept consignments one at a time; they accept the consolidated load a forwarder brings. The master bill of lading covers that whole load, and the house bill covers one consignment inside it.
So the number an individual uses to find their own goods is the HBL. A master number covers other people's cargo as well and cannot single yours out.
